Community Activities
Three community groups making a positive difference across Alfreton, Somercotes and the surrounding area have received funding through the first round of the 2026 Community Fund.
The latest grants have been awarded to Mickley Community Volunteer Group, The Catch Up Club and OSCARI, with each organisation receiving funding to support projects that tackle social isolation, provide inclusive community activities and improve facilities for local people.
Mickley Community Volunteer Group received £480 to cover room hire costs for its popular “Welcoming Spaces” café at Mickley Community Centre. The weekly sessions provide hot food and drinks, social activities and access to practical advice and support, helping people of all ages stay connected and reduce isolation.
The Catch Up Club was awarded £500 to support a range of activities for families with children who have special educational needs, as well as carers, personal support assistants and service users. The group offers a welcoming and supportive environment where people can connect and take part in enjoyable activities together.
A further £500 was awarded to OSCARI to help transform an existing kitchen area into dedicated storage for its community pantry, while also creating a small kitchenette to make the building more accessible and welcoming for those who use it.
Funding awards were presented by Doug Atherton, Funeral Director at Trafford Lowe Funeral Services, alongside Francesa Spencer-Fox from the Community Fund judging panel.
Speaking about the awards, Doug Atherton said: “We are delighted to be able to support these caring projects in the local area. The groups we have funded are making a real difference to people’s lives and providing meaningful support within our communities.”
Francesa Spencer-Fox added: “We’re proud to shine a light on the wonderful work taking place across our communities and look forward to seeing these projects continue to grow and help even more local people.”
The Trafford Lowe Community Fund was launched earlier this year to support non-profit projects benefiting people living within two miles of the funeral homes in Alfreton and Somercotes. Funding is available for initiatives that contribute to health, education, employment opportunities, or tackling poverty and social deprivation.
The next round of funding will open for applications on 29 June, with a further £1,000 available to support local good causes.
